What corals are actually eating

Not every coral uses these foods the same way. Many reef keepers lump all "coral food" into one category, but uptake is species-dependent and particle-size dependent.

Live phytoplankton is less theatrical. It is not always about an immediate visual response. Its value often shows up in steadier filter-feeder performance, stronger microfauna density, better support for live copepod cultures inside the tank, and a more continuous source of suspended nutrition rather than a short pulse of particulate feed.

For advanced systems, that distinction matters. A reef built around biodiversity usually performs better when food inputs do more than just feed the display corals for ten minutes. They should also support the animals you do not target directly, including the planktonic and benthic life that stabilizes the system over time.

Live phytoplankton versus powdered coral food in real use

If you run a heavily stocked SPS system with aggressive export and you want controlled, occasional particulate feeding, a powdered product may be perfectly appropriate. It is easy to store, easy to portion, and easy to integrate into a routine.

Product quality changes the comparison

A weak powdered food is still a powder. A weak live phyto product can be worse than it looks.

That includes reef tanks with mandarins and pod-dependent fish, systems with clams and other filter feeders, coral grow-out systems, broodstock setups, larval pathways, and refugium-driven nutrient strategies.
